PESHAWAR: The killer of Sikh community leader Charanjeet Singh was arrested by the police on Thursday.

The suspect, identified as Sheharyar, has reportedly confessed to the crime.

Investigations are underway and a team has been formed to find the assassin’s accomplices.

Earlier, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) caretaker Chief Minister Justice (r) Dost Mohammad Khan had ordered an investigation into the recent killing of the Sikh leader.

According to a local media report, Justice (r) Dost told a Sikh delegation that the law enforcement agencies would provide security to their community members. Moreover, the culprit involved in the killing of Charanjeet Singh would be caught. He also promised the payment of compensation to the heirs of the deceased on the pattern of the Shuhada Package.

In May, Sardar Charanjeet Singh, an active leader of the Sikh community in Peshawar, was shot dead by unknown assailants in his shop near the Kohat General Bus Stand, Kohat Road.

A police official had stated that Sardar Charanjeet Singh was present in his shop when unknown motorcyclists opened fire at him, killing him instantly. The assailants succeeded in escaping unharmed, the official added.

A large number of the community attended the funeral. The 42-year-old’s coffin was draped in Pakistan flag and placed inside Gurudwara Bhai Joga Singh in Peshawar. The body was then taken to Attock for cremation.
