KARACHI: The police informed an anti terrorism court administrative judge on Tuesday that they could not find any evidence against three detained suspects in a case involving the murder of a Chinese national and asked the court to release them, a local media outlet reported.
Saqib Ahmed, Mohammad Aamir Khan and Rehan Hashim were arrested for allegedly killing Chen Zhu in Defence Housing Authority (DHA), Karachi in February but subsequent probing by a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) could not find evidence against them.
Chen Zhu was the managing director of a shipping firm where police initially believed Hashim was an employee and Saqib the son of a business partner. It was hypothesised that the two hired an assassin to murder Chen Zhu.
Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Investigating Officer Syed Mohammad Sarfraz in his report to the court requested the court to release the three suspects under Section 497(II) of the Criminal Procedure Code as no evidence could be found against them.
The report stated that the CCTV footage failed to identify the perpetrators and that suspicion over phone communications between Saqib and Hashim regarding the murder of Chen Zhu led the authorities to constitute a JIT to investigate them.
Amir was declared ‘white’ while Saqib and Hashim were declared ‘grey’ by the JIT.
The report requested the court to release the suspects till incriminating evidence against the suspects in found.
