THE HAGUE: Dutch Queen Maxima’s younger sister has died in Buenos Aires, “most likely as a result of suicide”, the Dutch Royal House and media reports said Thursday.
The lifeless body of Ines Zorreguieta, 33, was found at around 0300 GMT on Thursday at her apartment in the western Almagro district of the Argentinian capital, the Spanish-speaking daily Clarin reported.
Zorreguieta, born in 1984 was a singer and guitarist and had previously suffered from depression, the Dutch NOS public newscaster said.
She was admitted to a psychiatric clinic in Buenos Aires in 2012, believed to have been suffering from anorexia and paranoia, the NOS added.
It said Maxima was close to her sister, who was 13 years younger.
Zorreguieta acted as one of Maxima’s bridesmaids at her wedding to Dutch King Willem-Alexander in 2002 and was the godmother to the royal couple’s third daughter, Princess Ariane.
Queen Maxima also has two brothers, Martin and Juan, as well as three half-sisters from her father’s first marriage.
Maxima has cancelled her public appearances for the following days after news of her sister’s death, Dutch news agencies reported.
