Shehri – Citizens for a Better Environment (Shehri-CBE) on Monday called for the implementation of Police Ordinance 2002 in its true spirit and conversion into a parliament act. In this regard, the non-governmental organisation (NGO) has invited all concerned citizens to an open session on police reforms on June 22 (Wednesday). In a statement issued on Monday, the organisers stated that the exercise aims at mobilisation and advocacy for the much warranted reforms and is a part of Shehri’s year long project titled ‘National Project for Participatory Citizens-Police Interaction and Training for Improved Policing of Human Rights Violations and Advocating Police Reforms.’
During the meeting, participants will be invited to point out drawbacks and implementation problems in police reforms and would be sensitised about the importance of implementation of police reforms. The opinions and solutions generated through this workshop will be presented in future seminars, before parliamentarians and in various focus group discussions around the country. The project’s objectives are to strengthen the capacity of law enforcement to respond to human rights violations and to promote greater citizen-police interaction and strengthen the public accountability of the police. It also aims at mobilisation and advocacy for implementation of Police Order 2002 in its true spirit and converting it into an act of parliament coupled with Public Interest Litigation. Efforts are also being made to establish help desks in other police stations on the pattern of Ferozabad Police Station as per police order 2002.
