The third installment of the Legally Blonde franchise starring Reese Witherspoon is officially in the works.

In final talks to return for the project are original screenwriters Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Karen McCullah, who wrote the script for the first film based on the Amanda Brown novel.

However, McCullah and Smith were not the writers behind the second film, so it’s not yet known if the third film will incorporate the events of 2003’s Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde.

Witherspoon is in early talks to reprise her role, Elle Woods, a wealthy sorority girl who discovered her own sense of self-worth after attending Harvard Law School. The original was released 17 years ago and the sequel came out in 2003.

The plot for the third film has not yet been revealed but it is expected to be much in the spirit of the first film, in which Woods’ idealism and pink-dominant wardrobe prevailed over the cynicism and snootiness all around her after the freshly dumped former sorority sister heads to law school. The sequel brought her to DC to join the staff of a congresswoman to pass a bill to ban animal testing.

According to Deadline, the third installment will probably be more about female empowerment, a message that hits at a fortuitous time in the culture.

Reese will also serve as a producer on the film.
