Arab Revolt against Ottoman Empire begins

 

 

Supported by the British and the French, the Arabs, led by the Emir of Mecca Hussein bin Ali revolt against the Ottoman Empire by attacking the city of Medina on June 5, 1916 during World War I.

The original aim of the revolt was to establish an independent Arab state from Syria in the West to Yemen. However, the Ottoman Empire was successfully able to suppress the revolt, with the region of Hejaz being an exception. The Ottoman empire was ultimately dissolved at the end of the Great War.

 


Marshall Plan is drafted

 

A draft of the European Recovery Program (ERP) is drafted by the US Secretary of State George Marshall on June 5, 1947. The Objective of the Marshall plan was to aid in the recovery of European countries after the devastation caused by the Second World War. More than $13 Billion (More than $110 billion today) was provided as aid to European countries on a per capita basis by the US to help rebuild heavily damaged regions, modernise industry, decrease trade barriers and fight against communism.

 


Six-Day War begins

 

 

The Arab Israeli Six- Day War begins on June 5, 1967.

The war began after Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser barred Israeli ships from moving through the straits of Tiran and assembled the army at Israel’s border. In response, the Israeli Air force launched airstrikes against Egypt on June 5 that decimated the Egyptian Air force. With dominance in the air, Israeli ground forces made rapid gains in the Gaza strip and Sinai, forcing Egyptian forces to flee. With the situation on the Egyptian border critical, Syria and Jordan launched their own military offensives but the Israeli forces successfully repulsed the attacks and captured the West Bank and Golan Heights. The shocking Israeli victory was complete by the the time a ceasefire was signed on June 11, 1967.

The World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on June 5 in order to raise awareness against environmental problems around the world. WED is celebrated in over 143 countries each year.
