Gastroenteritis kills six in Awaran as army initiates relief operation

QUETTA: At least six people were killed from Gastroenteritis in the Awaran district prompting the Balochistan government to seek assistance from army doctors in providing treatment to those suffering from the epidemic.

Women and children are among those who died from the disease within the past week, officials say.

“We have sent medical teams to the affected areas to provide treatment to the affected people,” Commissioner of Kalat Division Muhammad Hashim Ghilzai said.

An Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release says that the army has launched a relief operation after requests by the provincial government. Helicopters have been deployed to airlift patients in critical condition from Tranchik area of Awaran to Hub while teams medical teams have reached Awaran to provide treatment. Drinking water, ration packets, water tanks, mosquito nets and hygiene kits  have also been provided.

Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA)  officials say that many patients have been transferred to the Jam Ghulam Qadir Hospital in Hub.

“As many as 120 patients have already been admitted to the hospital,” said Medical Superintendent Dr Abbas Lasi. He added that another 21 were brought to the hospital on Monday and were being given the best medical treatment.
