The UN Security Council on Friday threw its crucial support behind Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s bid for a second term at the head of the global body.
The backing of the 15-member council was unanimous, diplomats said, and the General Assembly will complete the re-election of the former South Korean foreign minister next Tuesday. The council held a private meeting to decide on its candidate for secretary general.
It is the only time when the Security Council adopts a resolution in secret. But the meeting lasted barely three minutes and news of the crucial endorsement was announced by Twitter messages sent from inside by British, US and German diplomats.
