MELBOURNE: Pakistani powerlifter Maryam Nasim, despite having a back injury, defied all odds and won a bronze medal in Avia Powerlifting competition on Sunday.

Avia Powerlifting competition, which is approved by International Powerlifting Association and held under Australian Association, invites powerlifters of diverse nationalities residing across Australia.

Maryam, who won a silver medal last year, participated in 63 kilograms category alongside lifters from seven other countries.

After winning the medal, Maryam thanked her parents and coaches on social media and wrote: “Alhumdulillah finished my third comp today with a Bronze! I wasn’t expecting this considering I had an injury and couldn’t lift for two weeks.  Super proud of myself.  Thanks to my parents for constantly praying for me and my coach for helping me be a better and stronger version of myself.”

Maryam, who hails from Peshawar, is a banker by day and a powerlifter at night. She is currently residing in Australia, where she went for higher studies.
