ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz on Friday criticised the acquittal of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in the SSP junejo torture case, saying those who should be punished are acquitted whereas innocent people are subjected to extensive court proceedings.
Speaking to the media outside the accountability court, Maryam said that the orders to Imran Khan “must have come from above”.
Earlier on Friday, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) acquitted the PTI chief in a case pertaining to an attack on then Islamabad senior superintendent of police operations Asmatullah Junejo during the protest sit-in in 2014.
The court had deferred the judgement on April 25 in the acquittal plea submitted by Imran and ordered him to appear in person. The judge had threatened to issue arrest warrants if Imran did not appear before the court.
Political leaders and over 100 workers and supporters of PTI and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) were booked in the cases. The workers, who were arrested, were later released on bail.
