KARACHI: Pakistan on Thursday repatriated a 29-year-old ailing Indian prisoner, who had crossed into Pakistan unintentionally five years ago, on humanitarian bases.
Jitendra Arjunwar, who was suffering from thalassemia, was released from Karachi’s juvenile jail early in the morning and was flown to Lahore. He was handed over to Indian authorities at Wagah border checkpost.
The 29-year-old was under treatment in the juvenile jail for having thalassemia before being shifted to Landhi jail in Karachi, where all Indian prisoners are kept since January 2015.
He was released and deported after the efforts from civil society.
Arjunwar, who was resident of Madhya Pradesh in India, crossed the border from Rajasthan on August 12, 2013, after a fight with his family.
He was kept in Hyderabad jail after the court sentenced him to one year and shifted to Karachi on completing his jail term in 2014.
