LAHORE: Although several complaints have been registered against the station house officers (SHOs) of the city’s police stations and their alleged vindication of criminals involved in cases pertaining to murder, extortion, bribery and illegal occupation of land, no actions have been taken by the police department.

The SSP discipline also appears to be toothless against the influential criminals ruling the police stations across the provincial capital.

Sources told Pakistan Today that personnel and officers of the Punjab police, involved in cases of embezzlement and other crimes, are continuing to perform their duties on their respective posts regardless of the applications being submitted against them to the SSP discipline on a daily basis.

They informed that in more than 86 police stations of Lahore’s six divisions, hundreds of corrupt SHOs and other personnel were positioned, and neither had they been suspended after hundreds of applications against them, nor had the department launched an inquiry to probe the citizens’ claims.

According to sources, among the influential police officials allegedly involved in corruption and other crimes including that of illegal land occupation were Shalimar ex-SHO Ashfaq Khan, Shadbagh SHO Abrar Shah, Sheikh Hammad, Idrees Qureshi, Ahsan Ashraf Butt, Ahsanullah, Nasir Hameed, Ateeq Dogar, Javaid Gujjar, Intikhab Hussain, Rafiullah Niazi, Abrar Haider,Zaheeruddin Babar, Muhammad Sarwar, Asim Hameed, Abdullah Majid and others.

While inquiries were launched against some of the said officials, no further proceedings or actions were taken against any of them. Police sources blamed the support of the department’s high-ups owing to which, they said, no stern actions were taken.

On the other hand, sources informed, there were honest policemen who were not being appointed on any posts for they would not cater to the illegal practices currently going on in the police stations under senior officials’ supervision.

DIG spokesperson told this correspondent that DIG (Operations) Haider Ashraf was burning the midnight oil to bring out reforms in the police department and put an end to such issues.

He said that the DIG was ensuring that if any complaints were received against any SHO, the complaint was fully addressed and an action was taken against the officer if found guilty.
