Death toll rises as admin fails to control outbreak of diseases in prisons

Owing to the outbreak of several diseases in prisons across Punjab, more than 145 prisoners have died within the past one year, a private media outlet reported Thursday.

According to the report, as many as 15 prisoners suffering from different diseases including Hepatitis, AIDS, and other liver, heart and stomach ailments have passed away at the Lahore District Jail while 14 have lost their lives in the Lahore Camp Jail recently.

The highest number of deaths was recorded in Rawalpindi, where 27 prisoners lost their lives to similar diseases while the death toll in Gujranwala Central Jail stands at 14.

Moreover, as many as 13 and 8 deaths have been reported in the Multan and Bahawalpur Central Jails, respectively.

Authorities concerned have said that an inquiry would soon be launched to determine the cause of the rising numbers of death from diseases in prisons across the province.
