KARACHI: The water commission head, Justice (r) Amir Hani Muslim, on Monday admonished Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) Managing Director Khalid Sheikh over the water crisis in Karachi.

Justice (r) Muslim, heading Supreme Court-appointed judicial commission probing the failure of authorities, concerned to supply clean drinking water and improve sanitation facilities in Sindh, expressed his anger at KWSB for failing to provide water to people of the metropolitan city.

During the hearing at Sindh High Court (SHC) the commission head asked what is happening in Karachi? Where has all the water gone?He further asked to call MD water board, adding if he is busy then where are others officers?

The commission then summoned KWSB MD Khalid Sheikh, who appeared before the court later.

The commission then questioned the MD about the water crisis in the city. “Do you read the newspaper? People are abusing the KWSB. Water is not available even in surrounding area of hydrants. People install water lines but they still don’t get water,” Justice (r) Muslim remarked.

In his response, Sheikh stated that people who are getting water should be thankful. Upon this, the commission head reprimanded the MD stating that it was his duty to distribute the water to the people and he has destroyed the water distribution process.

“We understand the problems of the people,” Sheikh stated adding that people are facing problems related to limited access to the water.

On March 20, SC-appointed commission ordered to demolish all new housing schemes if they are found to have broken the laws, governing such projects.

The commission also ordered the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) to probe the issue of encroachments alongside rivers and nullahs in the city.
