–Nisar says he wants to give maximum relief to the people before retiring

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar on Friday stated that he wishes to finish the cases that he has started before leaving the post, adding that he has always thought of providing ease to the general public.

The CJP expressed these views during the hearing of a case related to the high prices of medicines in the country.

During the proceedings, Justice Nisar also said that only the parliament has the power to decide the imposition or exemption of tax on commodities. However, he said he would try to give as much relief to the people as possible before retirement.

The chief justice made these remarks after the counsel for Pharma Bureau — a representative body of multinational pharmaceuticals in Pakistan — asked for a date to be fixed for the next hearing of the case.

The top court also summoned a detailed report from the Federal Health Ministry clarifying that no adjournment will be given in the case anymore as the court intends to hear the complete case on May 15.

During the hearing, the health secretary submitted an interim report in the court, stating that different categories were made to classify medicines.

The CJP remarked that he will resolve public welfare issues that they have touched in court and will not let the matter be taken elsewhere.
