- Cannot say anything about NRO: Khurshid Shah
ISLAMABAD:
Leader of the Opposition in Senate Sherry Rehman on Wednesday announced to bring a privilege motion against Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi over his remarks against the Senate chairman.
In a statement, Sherry Rehman said that the premier should not have delivered such negative remarks regarding the Senate polls, asking him to apologise.
At separate gatherings in Nankana Sahib and Lahore, PM Abbasi had expressed concern over the alleged horse-trading and ‘money-bought’ chairmanship in Senate. “The [Senate] chairman was not known in the political circles before,” he taunted.
His statement had sparked anger among the opposition as chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan had also criticized him, saying “So now PM Abbasi is crying about horse-trading & money deciding Senate elections! If his party was so concerned why didn’t t they support PTI’s proposals to change Senate elections’ format to prevent exactly these shenanigans earlier?”
On March 13, an independent candidate from Balochistan Sadiq Sanjrani, backed by the joint opposition, won the Senate chairmanship with 57 votes against 46 of ruling party’s candidate while Saleem Mandviwalla belonging to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was elected as the deputy chairman of Senate.
CANNOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT NRO: KHURSHID SHAH
National Assembly’s opposition leader Khurshid Shah said that everyone should follow what the system and constitution says, adding that he could not say anything about the supposed NRO.
“System, judiciary and institutions should be strengthened in the country. There will be no need of NRO if the system and institutions are strong,” he said while talking to media on Wednesday.
On the meeting between PM and CJP, he said that such meetings should be held regularly.
“The meeting will backfire in prevailing situation, which is dangerous,” he added.
“We should follow what judiciary and system say. There is no need of NRO if the system is strong,” he added.
He further said that leaders of institutions should meet but there is a proper time for such meetings and decisions. He said that the judiciary should summon the chief ministers and provide them guidelines.
