LAHORE: The price of a roti (bread) was increased by Rs2 in the provincial capital here on Wednesday. The previously sold bread at tandoors (ovens) at Rs6 will now be sold at Rs8 with immediate effect.

The decision was made after a meeting held between Lahore’s district administration and the Roti Naan Manufacturing Association in which it was mutually agreed to increase the prices. The new price of the khameeri roti (yeast bread) was set at Rs10 against the old price of Rs8.

This move is said to affect the masses as it would take the basic necessities even further from the reach of poor people, which may in turn prove to be consequential for the ruling party in the next general elections.

However, Lahore’s district administration maintained that the tandoor owners have been ordained to ensure the quality and the minimum weight of the breads. The minimum weight of the bread would now be 120gm as opposed to the previous requirement of 100gm, which means an increase of 20gm in the total weight of bread.

The official sources have confirmed that the prices have been increased due to the deteriorating value of Pak Rupee against US dollar as well as the surge in petroleum prices. The price increase would soon come into effect in all other districts of Punjab in the coming days, sources said.
