Father of Maqsood, the man who was murdered in an alleged crossfire between police and suspected robbers in January in Karachi, accompanied by the human rights activist and lawyer Jibran Nasir on Tuesday raised questions over the handling of the investigation of the case, accusing the cops of “committing murder in broad daylight”.
Talking to the media, they maintained that the challan submitted by the police before the court has exposed many things.
Nasir stressed on the fact that the police firing had not only resulted in the death of Maqsood “but also that of the suspected robbers”.
“Police have committed murder in broad daylight,” he said while demanding that the CCTV footage of the incident be released in public interest.
“My son was martyred by the police. I have not received any justice. He was not carrying a weapon. I demand that the authorities release the CCTV video so that people can know the truth,” the father of deceased demanded.
Nasir condemned the bail given to the primary accused Assistant Sub Inspector Tariq and four other suspects named in the case.
“Police have stated in the charge sheet that no weapons were found. The deceased was not a dacoit. I have seen the CCTV video which clearly shows the policeman shooting the innocent man under the pretext of an encounter,” Nasir said.
Earlier today, the Sindh Home Minister Suhail Anwar Siyal had said that such unfortunate incidents of extrajudicial killings are taking place ‘one after another.’ However, he maintained that the police do not do that on purpose or with intentions.
The minister called Maqsood, ‘innocent’. He also denied the accusations that the government is trying to protect the accused.
Earlier in January, the Sindh police chief AD Khowaja had supported the narrative presented by the police while talking to a private TV channel. However, he had assured to launch an enquire after Maqsood’s sister had made such demands.
