ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) has directed the federal government to pay Rs 2.4 billion to the Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) pensioners by March 27, 2018.

A three-member bench of the SC presided over by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed took up the EOBI pension case for hearing on Thursday.

Over the course of the hearing, Finance Secretary Arif Khan assured the court of payment of the said amount; however, he pleaded that it was not possible for the government to pay the amount in a lump sum and requested to make it in three installments.

The court rejected the secretary’s plea and ordered that all full amount to be paid by March 27 when the bench will resume the hearing.

Addressing the secretary, Justice Saeed said if the full amount is not paid by required time then the court will ask him to reappear. He further remarked that the attitude of the government towards the pensioners is extremely inappropriate.
