Senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in Sindh, Syed Ghaus Ali Shah, has been nominated as the new president of the Sindh party. Party chief Mian Nawaz Sharif was supposed to formally announce the decision during his now-postponed visit to Sindh, but with Sharif unable to travel due to “technical reasons,” these plans had to be shelved. Sources told Pakistan Today that after consultations with the senior central leadership of the party, Nawaz settled on Ghaus as the Sindh president. Since Nawaz could not make it to Sindh himself, he authorised Ghaus to go and the meet the families of slain journalists Syed Saleem Shehzad and Wali Babar, as well as local leader Tariq Khan, who had been gunned down by unidentified persons. Ghaus subsequently complied with Nawaz’s orders, and also met with ailing leader of the Sindh party, Zahid Latif Butt.
PML-N currently has no party structure in Sindh; senior leader Saleem Zia had been appointed as chief organiser and tasked with restructuring a party that is at present is fractured into many little factions.
Factions opposed to Ghaus, however, are unhappy with Nawaz’s decision. “We will not openly oppose Nawaz Sharif’s decision, but we will reduce our activities,” one of the leaders of an anti-Ghaus faction told Pakistan Today. On the other hand, those in the Ghaus camp believe that the party will “definitely become active” following his appointment. “We expect some factions of the party to remain inactive,” one of the pro-Ghaus leaders said.
