LAHORE: The executive body of the Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) in a meeting on Tuesday decided to postpone the coming elections of the association.

The association cited the appointment of teachers on administrative posts as a reason for the postponement of elections, which it said was against the ASA constitution that prohibits the members from accepting any administrative position.

According to the PUASA, a few teachers from a political group pressurised the administration (for their personal agendas) to occupy certain administrative offices just before the ASA elections.

“Due to their malicious intentions and personal agendas, the administration has not only come under the pressure and given them few administrative positions, but it has now named the coming elections biased and disputed,” said a PUASA press release.

The association requested the Punjab University administration to provide a level playing field to all candidates. It urged the varsity Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Zakriya to support the community in conducting fair elections.

“We also hope that the office of the VC would not act as a tool to further bifurcate the teaching community into groups by obliging the members of one political group,” the association concluded.
