ISLAMABAD: The political temperature of Pakistan is on the rise as political parties have doubled their efforts to establish the strategic alliance for the seat of Senate chairman and deputy chairman positions.

The real competition is expected between Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) which will be highly dependent on independent candidates.

According to media reports, the political parties are in contact with seven to eight independent candidates who can change the course of polls for Senate chairmanship.

A delegation of PPP led by Fazal Karim Kundi and Dr Abdul Qayum Soomro has reached Quetta to meet Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo. PPP delegation will try to convince the independent Senators to join Peoples Party.

Earlier, PPP leader and opposition leader Khursheed Shah claimed that Peoples Party will “win the war” of the Senate chairmanship.

In Senate elections, held on March 3, PML-N backed candidates won 15 seats in the upper house and now has total 33 Senators. PPP has now total 21 seats after winning 12 seats in latest elections. The party, along with its alliances, now holds 40 seats in the Upper House.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is the third largest party in Senate with total 12 seats and its alliance with any party will also play a critical role.
