LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami chief Senator Sirajul Haq has counselled ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif to accept the Supreme Court’s (SC) decision as the country could not afford any mishap or emergency situation.
Talking to media outside the Parliament House on Thursday, he said that Nawaz should have set an example by accepting the apex court’s decision from the very beginning, and should not have challenged his disqualification at the GT Road.
The JI chief said that the disqualified prime minister had advised Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani to accept his disqualification by the Supreme Court, and now it was the time that he did the same. “Nawaz should take pity on the nation. Pakistan is a habitation of human beings and not of animals, and we won’t allow it to become a habitation of the animals,” he remarked.
Sirajul Haq further said that the SC’s decision was against an individual and not against the parliament or the system. According to the decision, an individual not qualified to be a member of the parliament could not be the head a political party.
The JI chief, however, said that the Senate elections should be held according to the schedule in a peaceful atmosphere and democratic system should not be derailed.
He further said that the powerful elite of the country had never been subjected to accountability. He added that some individuals were moving ahead towards a clash of institutions only to escape accountability.
However, he said, that the masses were not in favour of such a clash.
Siraj also said that for the first time, the SC had begun the accountability of the powerful elite by taking a strict action and it was to be seen how this historic decision would affect the country’s politics and the future.
The JI chief also said that the parliament was the representative of the country and the entire nation, and using the parliament for an individual was a mockery of the constitution and the law. He added that such a parliament would also lose the confidence of the masses.
Sirajul Haq went on to say that all the political parties should be on one page over the supremacy of the Constitution and the judiciary.
