The city police is vying for a life insurance plan for its officials, considering the security threats and has moved a summary in the Finance Department to work out the details, sources told Pakistan Today.

Nearly 500 policemen from junior rank officials to the additional inspector generals have already got an insurance plan. Sources said the plan initiated by former Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Aslam Tareen has been envisaged initially for the city police and will be later expanded to the entire province.

The insurance plan ranges between monthly instalment of Rs 2,000 to Rs 5000, covering for Rs 2.5 million to Rs 10 million respectively. Sources said the monthly instalment would be deducted from the policemen’s salaries. They said most of the junior rank officers have opted for Rs 2000 monthly instalment, while the high-ups have opted for Rs 5000 monthly instalment.

They said the insurance plan would cover the medical side, in case of major surgery and disability caused by accident or terrorist attack, and would also cover in case of death. Moreover, the police officials will also get bonuses announced by the State Life Insurance Company, which is providing the cover.

The sources revealed that a few of those who have got the insurance plan include AIG Sarmad Saeed Khan, SSP (admin) Tariq Abbas Qureshi, DSP Khalid Mehmood, DSP Shakeel Khokhar, while CCPO Tahir Raza will get the plan after the plan is finalised.
Sources said the decision has been taken under the light of the vision of the Punjab inspector general of police, who has declared the current year as the “year of the police” and after taking into account the current security environment and threat to the lives of police officers.

They said the plan was initially sent to the accountant general, as the monthly instalments will be deducted from the salaries of the officers at source. They said the AG office has finalized the procedure and it has now been moved to the Finance Department secretary, who will work out the details by the end of this month.

A senior police officer, who got the insurance plan, seeking anonymity, said that the police officers’ work was ‘dangerous’ especially after terrorists attacks on important places.

“Even if a police officer dies in a car accident, the money given to his family is very meagre and no one takes care of his finances.

The situation is worse in case of junior rank officials, who will get Rs 2.5 million in case some unfortunate incident takes place. The plan is a good step for all because now at least our families will get a handsome amount if, god forbids, something untoward happens to us,” he added.
