ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar on Tuesday ordered two daily newspapers to publish a clarification explaining why the newsgroup failed to run a correction regarding a news story that appeared in the papers on Monday claiming the CJP wanted Shehbaz Sharif to be the next prime minister.

On Monday, the chief justice took notice of a fake news story published in The News and Daily Jang newspapers titled “Wants Shahbaz Sharif to become prime minister,” attributing the quote to Justice Nisar. He had ordered Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, the chief editor and publisher of the newspapers, to appear before the Supreme Court (SC); however, he (the owner) failed to do so.

Justice Nisar asked Qayyum Siddiqui, who was representing the owner in court, why a correction had not been published despite the court’s earlier order. Siddiqui responded that he had conveyed court order to the chief editor and was not aware why the papers did not run a correction.

“The media group must publish a clarification [explaining why a correction was not published] just like they published the original story,” the CJP said and warned that if the group fails to publish a correction, he would order Sindh and Punjab’s inspectors general of police to produce the owner in the court.

  1. Mr CJP! It is called benign neglect of your orders. It gets maximum publicity for the offender. He will creep to the cross later on and plead a misunderstanding–period.
