KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly on Friday unanimously passed a censure resolution against Thursday’s attack at the Crime Investigation Department (CID) office in the provincial metropolis.
The censure resolution was jointly tabled by Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s deputy parliamentary leader and Sindh Youth Affairs Minister Faisal Sabzwari, Leader of Opposition Jam Madad Ali, National People’s Party’s Arif Mustafa Jatoi and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) Shehryar Maher.
The resolution termed the CID office hit an attack on national sovereignty. It said that the time had come for the nation to unite against terrorism and the policemen, who lost their lives in the tragedy, would be eternally remembered with great respect.
Speaking on the occasion, Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza said that through the provincial assembly, he was making sure that the people of Sindh were protected at all costs. He criticised a section of the press for disseminating fake crime statistics and spreading panic amongst the citizens of Karachi.
Mirza announced that the government would approach the judiciary to put an end to the dissemination of such news. He said that 16 people, including six Frontier Corps (FC) personnel and four policemen, were killed in the CID office attack.
Benevolent fund: Meanwhile, the House also passed the Government Employees Benevolent Fund Amended Bill, 2010, after which the family of government employees including biological children, stepchildren and adopted children up to the age of 21, widows and ex-wives would benefit from the fund. The bill was jointly presented by members of provincial assembly (MPAs) Bachal Shah, Heer Soho, Rukhsana Shah,
Tauqeer Fatima Bhutto and Humera Alwani. For the second consecutive day, the MQM lawmakers staged a token walkout against the decision to impose the flood tax and the reformed general sales tax. However, they eventually returned to the floor after an hour.
