Politics of alliances will dominate the next era of national politics, as no main stream political party stands out among the masses in the changing national scenario, former foreign minister and senior Muttahida Muslim League (MML) leader Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri said on Saturday.
He was talking to Pakistan Today in an exclusive interview. Kasuri said some political parties, once having an electoral mandate in all the provinces, had lost their worth in one or the other region and would now have to make alliances with other regional political forces o form a government. He said no single political party would be in a position to form government in the future, therefore, forging alliances would be the best, and possibly, only strategy.
Kasuri said the MML had been formed through an alliance of four Muslim League factions – PML-Q Likeminded, PML-Zia, Awami Muslim League (AML) and PML-Functional – after realising the coming trend of politics. He said allied leaders had decided to contest the next general election from the MML platform, however, deliberations to forge alliance with other likeminded political forces to form a larger election coalition were still underway.
He said the MML leadership was consulting and contacting all political forces to form a broader alliance and an announcement on the matter would be made on June 7. Kasuri said the time had come for all political forces to stand united to end foreign intervention and safeguard the sovereignty of the country. Commenting on the US drone attacks and breach of national sovereignty, he said the govt should publicise its policy on drone attacks and take the people into confidence.
He said until the government disclosed its national policy, speculations and revulsions would continue surfacing and increase the trust gap between the govt and the public.
