ISLAMABAD: A three-member National Accountability Bureau (NAB) team left for the UK to expand the probe into former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s alleged ownership of flagship investments, according to a local English daily.
The NAB team, headed by NAB’s Director General (Operations), Zahir Shah, will meet the concerned authorities in London to gather further evidence about the charges levelled against the Sharifs, over allegedly owning 15 off-shore companies in the UK.
The NAB team is due to return to the country on Wednesday.
A joint investigation team (JIT) — formed by the Supreme Court (SC) — had hired services of a UK-based solicitor firm Quist along with an investigative firm in the UK to assist in the collection and dispatch of all relevant evidence/documents regarding the said case.
Another NAB team visited London for the same purpose a couple of weeks ago but according to media reports, British Version Island (BVI) refused to cooperate with them in this regard.
However, the bureau reportedly had obtained more details afterwards and therefore a supplementary reference would be filed soon.
A five-member bench of the SC on July 28 had directed NAB to file references against Nawaz and his children in six weeks in the accountability court and directed the trial court to decide the references within six months.
The former premier and his sons, Hassan and Hussain, have been named in all three NAB references, while Maryam and husband Safdar have been named only in the Avenfield reference.
