During a protest in Mirpurkhas against the mill owners of Sindh on Thursday, a peasant attempted to self-immolate himself, calling for the implementation of the official rate of the sugar-cane set by the government.
Majeed Qambrani, the peasant, suffered 30 to 40 percent burn injuries and was shifted to civil hospital for treatment.
A farmers’ leader, Javed Junejo, told a private media group, that Qambrani attempted self-immolation during the protest sit-in at Mirpurkhas toll plaza which Junejo and others were leading.
Junejo said that the peasant owned four acres of land where he cultivated sugar cane but was disappointed since the mills were not procuring the crop from growers.
Sugarcane price, earlier this month, was set at Rs182 per 40 kilograms for 2017-18 by the Sindh government, but the mill owners were not seen to be willing to procure sugar-cane at the official price stipulated by the provincial government.
