ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Mayor and Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Sheikh Anser Aziz said Tuesday that special funds have been released to the authority’s Water Supply Wing to ensure sufficient supply of water to the residents of the federal capital during the upcoming summer season.

He said that in order to meet the growing water demand during the summer season, funds have been released for necessary repair and maintenance work on 10 water tankers, which also included repair and maintenance of water pipes. Presently, water related complaints from the residents of the city were being addressed through 17 water tankers, he added.

Around 3,600 feet of water pipe had been purchased for water tankers, while new water pipes have already been installed in 28 water tankers, he said. The authority’s Water Supply Wing possessed a fleet of 34 water tankers, he added.

Sheikh Anser also said that the Metropolitan Corporation of Islamabad (MCI) was utilising its own resources to carry out repair and maintenance work of the water tankers from MCI’s Machinery Pool Organisation (MPO).

He said that the rest of the water tankers would be functional after necessary repair and maintenance work being supervised by the MPO.

Furthermore, he said that the main water supply line of 36 inches had been repaired at Quaid-i-Azam University point. Similarly, 10 inches of water supply pipeline had also been repaired to resolve the longstanding water problem being faced by the residents of sector G-10.

He also said that water storage had not increased at Simly Dam due to less rains, adding that he directed the quarters concerned to utilise the existing water storage with better management and take stern action against illegal water connections.

He further said that the Water Supply Wing had issued directions to the Enforcement Directorate and Building Control Section for action against 25 illegal operational service stations located in different sectors of the city, including Sector G-9, G-8, G-7, I-10, G-10 and I-9.

Moreover, Sheikh Anser said that illegal service stations have been served with notices several times, while adding that it was time to take stern action against these illegal stations.

He said that the total water storage capacity of Simly Dam was 2,315 feet, but the existing water level stood at 2,285 due to less rains. Currently, 24 million gallons of water was being supplied to the residents of the federal capital from Simly Dam on a daily basis, while 24 million gallons of water was being provided from tube wells and other resources on a daily basis, he added.

He also said that the existing water storage would be utilised through better strategy and management till the monsoon rain spells began.

He requested the residents of the capital to take precautionary measures while using water in order to avoid wasting the precious resource.
