The two corneas donated by a Karachi-based lady after her death on Friday were successfully transplanted into two blind patients at Pakistan Eye Bank Society (PEBS).
PEBS received a call from the family of a deceased lady, who pledged for eye donation after death as vital will. The PEB team led by Dr Raheel Rahman, retrieved two corneas from the deceased lady within two hours after her death.
A team of eye specialists led by Medical Director, Pakistan Eye Bank society, Dr Qazi Wasiq, successfully operated two patients Ms Jamal and Muhammad Hussain, waiting for corneal transplant at PEBS Hospital free of charge within 48 hours.
It is worth mentioning that PEBS have provided more than 16,000 corneas for poor corneal blind patients free of charge, till now 206 corneas were received from local donors, while more than 3,5000 living donors have pledged for corneal donation after death (it is family’s commitment to fulfill deceased’s free will to accomplish). There are more than 250,000 corneal blind patients in Pakistan.
