10 killed as bus hits stationary trailer on motorway

KHANEWAL: Ten passengers were killed and another 20 injured as the passenger bus they were riding collided with a stationary trailer parked on a lane of the  Multan-Khanewal section of M4-Motorway during early hours of Thursday.

Those killed included two women and an eleven-year-old child. Motorway police declared dense fog as the factor behind the accident and said that the bus was carrying over 40 passengers. Witnesses said that they saw no reflectors installed around the stationary trailer.

The Lahore-Rajanpur bus, when reached near Shamkot, Rasheeda Inter-change on M4 Motorway, collided with the rear side of the trailer parked there.

The left side of the bus was badly damaged, hurting all passengers seated on that side. Later, the bust turned upside down, causing death of seven passengers on-the-spot.

Rescue 1122 Khanewal rushed to the spot and shifted all the dead and the injured, total 30, to Nishtar Hospital Multan.

Those killed included a third-year medical college student Qazi Muhammad Sudais (25), son of Qazi Shahzad of Jampur, another third-year medical student Aniqa Subhan (22), daughter of Haji Abdul Subhan of Jampur, regional head Cooperatives Department Lahore Malik Mureed Hussain (47), son of Muhammad Bakhsh of Jampur, Muhammad Afzal (34), son of Ayaz of Pakpattan, Waseem Khan (40), son

of Mursalin of Dera Ghazi Khan, Sardaran Bibi (60), wife of Abdul Ghaffar of Jampur, Hammad Atiq Qureshi (11), son of Atiq of Jampur, a 22-year-old unidentified woman of Khanewal, and two otherunidentified persons of Khanewal, according to Nishtar Hospital and rescue sources.

The injured included Noraiz, Ayesha, Ajmal, Zulqarnain, Shahid, Faiz, Ammara, Muhammad Aalyan, son of Siddique, Farzana, Shahid, son of Khalid, Abu Bakar, son of Jamil Ahmad, Mumtaz Inamullah, Dilshad, Muhammad Ashraf, Abu Bakar, son of Hammad, Faiz, son of Umar, Jabbar son of Ismail, and bus hostess Sundas.

Director Accidents and Emergencies Nishtar Hospital Multan said that 10 injured have been shifted to ward 24, one to ward 14, another to Neurosurgery Trauma Unit (NTU), one was still under treatment in emergency ward while three injured persons have been discharged.
