ISLAMABAD: As many as 51,241 cases were registered pertaining to violence against women (VAW) from January 2011 to June 2017, with the highest number of 15,461 cases of domestic violence followed by 14,579 cases of other nature.
According to the official data of police, 8,418 cases were reported in the year 2011, the 8,845 cases in 2012, 7,573 in 2013, 7,741 in 2014, 6,527 in 2015, 8,031 in 2016 and 4,066 during first six months of the current year.
The reported crimes included domestic violence, honor killing, burning, sexual assaults, harassment at workplace and other crimes, official documents available to APP revealed.
During the said period, total domestic violence cases were 15,461, including 8,051 cases of murder, 4,865 of beating and 2,545 cases of other violence.
In 2011, domestic violence cases including murder, beating and others were 1,248, 749 and 387 respectively, while in 2012 they were 1,559, 891 and 387 respectively, followed by 1,373, 675 and 413 in 2013. In 2014, it remained at 1,109, 653 and 325, and in 2015 it was 836, 676 and 309.
In 2016, these figures stood at 1,320, 914 and 361 followed by 606, 307 and 427 respectively in the first six months of the current year.
The reported cases of honor killing during this time span were 2,532 including 477 in 2011, 424 in 2012, 470 in 2013, 326 in 2014, 320 in 2015, 355 in 2016 and 160 in first six months of this year.
Cases of burning during this time period were 198 including 163 acid and 35 reported stove cases. 50 cases of ‘vani’ were reported during this duration while sexual assault cases were 17,448.
Besides that, 1,011 cases of harassment at work place were reported including 675 cases of physical, 313 cases of sexual and three cases psychological harassment where 14,579 cases related to violence against women were reported during the above mentioned period.
