Roger Federer has been voted BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year for a record fourth time after a public vote during which he picked up two more titles.

Federer returned from six months out with leg injury to win the Australian Open before picking up a record eighth Wimbledon crown and ended the season with a 52-5 record, ranked world number two behind his great rival Rafael Nadal. Federer is already certain to finish behind Rafael Nadal in the final rankings of 2017, but the world number two appears poised to push his old rival for top spot next year.

Federer previously won the award in 2004, 2006 and 2007. Muhammad Ali and Usain Bolt are other winners each of them won it three times.

“It makes me incredibly proud that the UK public has chosen me as the BBC overseas sports personality of the year for 2017,” said Federer.

He was shortlisted by an expert panel this year alongside Tom Brady (American football), Katie Ledecky (swimming), Tatyana McFadden (Para-athletics), Sally Pearson (athletics) and Michael van Gerwen (darts).

He overcame competition from American football quarterback Tom Brady, swimmer Katie Ledecky, para-athlete Tatyana McFadden, athlete Sally Pearson, and darts player Michael van Gerwen.

The award will be part of the BBC  Sports Personality of the Year ceremony which takes place at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Sunday.
