KARACHI: The Supreme Court on Friday sought a reply from the federation over the bail application of former Sindh information minister Sharjeel Inam Memon in Rs5.76 billion corruption case.
A three-member bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa heard the bail application of Memon in a NAB case against him on charges of corruption amounting to Rs5.76 billion.
At present, the former Sindh minister is in prison after a Sindh High Court bench revoked interim bail granted to him and others in the case.
During the hearing, Justice Khosa observed that it was unusual that people fell ill the moment they were arrested by NAB. He remarked that NAB needed to construct a state-of-the-art hospital for the high profile accused.
Khosa said that as per media report Memon had been allocated a whole floor of the hospital where he is admitted.
He remarked that the law allowed shifting of inmates to the hospital for treatment, but people were misusing this facility. He added it has become a practice that medical board constituted to examine any under-trial prisoners favours the accused. He further said that the courts have now become cautious.
Upon this, Sharjeel’s counsel said that the jail administration wrote to Sindh government stating that Sharjeel’s treatment cannot be done at the prison which is why he was shifted to hospital.
The court while issuing a notice to federal government adjourned the hearing of the case till the first week of January.
