LAHORE: A lawyer has approached the Lahore High Court for the disqualification of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan on the basis of the Justice Najafi Report on the Model Town tragedy of 2014.

Advocate Shoaib Saleem told the court that according to the conclusions of Justice Ali Baqar Najafi’s inquiry tribunal report, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan were guilty of making false claims before the court, the media and the public.

He further said that the report had called Punjab police out for doing exactly what it went in to do, namely, participation in the “massacre”, and it was not difficult to trace the source of the directive.

The petitioner also stated that the inquiry tribunal accused the Punjab government of concealing facts and hindering investigation while observing that its officials tried to cover up for each other, preventing the tribunal from arriving at a definitive conclusion.

He said that the Model Town inquiry report clearly depicted in its conclusion that the chief minister and the law minister submitted false affidavits regarding the disengagement of police from the place of the occurrence.

He, therefore, demanded from the court to disqualify the respondents in light of Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution and to direct the Election Commission of Pakistan to de-notify them as Members of the National Assembly (MNAs).

He also asked the court to restrain the respondents from performing their duties till a decision regarding the petition had been reached at.
