Turkey offers scholarships for Comsats students, researchers

ISLAMABAD: Turkey has offered multi-disciplinary scholarships for the students and researchers of Comsats Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) in order to expand the institute’s research and quality education scope.

This commitment was offered by a four-member Turkish delegation during their visit to the Comsats secretariat here, said a press statement issued here by the Comsats secretariat on Thursday.

The delegation comprised of The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) President Professor Dr Ahmet Arif Ergin, TUBITAK Marmara Research Centre (MAM) President Dr Orkun Hasekioglu, and two other officials.

The delegates are currently visiting Islamabad to hold meetings with senior officials of COMSTECH regarding agenda of the first Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit on Science and Technology held on September 10 in Astana, Kazakhstan.

During their meeting with Comsats Executive Director Dr S M Junaid Zaidi, avenues of collaboration were explored between the two sides for future programmes and activities. Other senior officials of Comsats secretariat were also present on the occasion.

Dr Zaidi greatly admired the continued support extended by TUBITAK MAM since the genesis of Comsats and aspired for the same in the future. In particular, he was appreciative of research activities being carried out at MAM, one of the centres of excellence of Comsats, and expressed desire to increase the participation of the centre in future collaborations.

During the briefing session, in which presentation on Comsats was made by Dr Zaidi, the delegation members took keen interest in Comsats tele-health programme and were also inquisitive about Comsats International Thematic Research Groups (ITRGs). Dr Zaidi solicited support for dispatching Turkish students at Comsats for apprenticeship.

Dr Hasekioglu made a generous scholarship proposition for the students and researchers of Comsats. The Turkish delegates assured Dr Zaidi of their possible support for the establishment of a research and development centre/university in one of the Comsats member states.

The meeting concluded with a pledge to extend cooperation and intensify joint efforts to explore more avenues of latest research methodologies.
