Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday asked the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)-led federal government to quit and demanded fresh general elections under revised electoral rules and a new election commission under supervision of CJP Iftikhar Chaudhry. He was delivering a lecture on “Future of Pakistan and National Responsibilities” organised by the University of Lahore (UoL) at a local hotel.
He said that his party will hold a long march from Multan to Islamabad to pressurise the federal government to take action against drone attacks. Criticising the federal government for declaring the war on terror as its own, Imran asked that if it was our war then why did the federal government took US aid? The PTI chairman said that his generation was not informed about the killing of East Pakistanis when they were declared “Indian-backed terrorists”.
“In the war on terror, our own people are being killed,” he said. Imran praised Wikileaks for showing the hypocrisy of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and others. He accused PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif for using the All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) for his own political motives. Commenting on the PNS Mehran Base terrorist attack, Imran said, “I am not worried about the involvement of foreign hands in the attack but our own people are involved in such activities. The armed forces are also fed up of killing their own men on American orders.”
Terming it the right time for a change, he advised students to stand up against the unjust system. “You have to decide the type of country you want to live in, either independent or one dictated by others and terror-stricken,” Imran said. Blaming the PML-N for copying the PTI’s programmes and agenda, he said that the PTI has a 90 days programme but it is not releasing it amid fears of being copied by the PML-N. Presenting his party’s plan, Imran said that his party aims at increasing the ratio of tax payers from nine to 20 percent.
The PTI chairman said that he has written a book, which will be published in September. He said that the book includes a complete chapter on the concepts of Allama Iqbal. Imran Khan, expressing optimism, said that Pakistan will soon become a country according to the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Imran said that the PTI is conducting party elections in all its wings and did not support feudal and family politics.
UoL Board of Governors Chairman MA Rauf asked Imran to advise the federal government not to lower the support price of wheat and also not implement agricultural tax. “The federal government should stop giving bailout packages to white elephants such as the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Pakistan Railways and Pakistan Steel Mills,” he said. Separately, Imran also addressed a lawyers’ seminar at the Lahore High Court (LHC). Nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan also addressed the seminar by telephone.
