ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Thursday passed a unanimous resolution condemning the United States’ decision to recognise Jerusalem as the so-called capital of Israel and to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
The resolution termed it a direct attack on the Muslim Ummah at a time when the Middle East is already beset with wars and conflicts. It said that the US move is also a violation of international law, several resolutions of United Nations Security Council over the matter, and Global consensus on how to resolve the Palestine conflict.
The National Assembly endorsed the final communique of OIC adopted on Monday last in Jeddah and called on the government to immediately mobilise the Organisation of the Islamic Countries seeking concrete diplomatic steps against this US action.
The National Assembly also demanded the United States to immediately take back its decision.
The declaration by the US calls into question seven decades of deliberate diplomatic ambiguity about the final status of a holy city vociferously claimed by both Israelis and Palestinians. Trump also kicked off the process of moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, making good on a campaign promise dear to evangelical Christians and right-wing Jewish voters – as well as donors.
He said that his decision marked the start of a new approach to solving the thorny conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. Trump’s predecessors – from Bill Clinton to George Bush – made similar promises on the campaign trail but quickly reneged upon taking office.
