KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court on Saturday extended the physical remand of nine suspects allegedly involved in the murder of a young couple who had contracted free will marriage until December 11.
Mominabad Police presented nine suspects before the ATC following which the officer probing the case stated that he required more time to investigate the suspects.
An anti-terrorism court had issued a five-day police remand of nine suspects allegedly involved in the case of ‘honour killing’. In the case which was filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act sections and Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code, nine individuals have already been arrested while seven suspects are currently on the run.
According to Mominabad police, the deceased couple, identified as Abdul Hadi and Hussaini Bibi from Kohistan, had tied the knot one and a half month ago without seeking the consent of their elders. The couple had rented a house within the jurisdiction of Mominabad police station to live outside the influence of their families.
On November 24, the residents of the area spotted blood around the house and immediately called the police to investigate the matter.
Orangi Senior Superintendent of Police Abid Baloch has stated that a suspect arrested in connection to the case had confessed to killing the couple with the help of accomplices after receiving orders from a jirga.
The incident raised concern in the provincial corridors of power as Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took stern notice of the incident and said, “This is a metropolitan city and not a tribal area. Then how come a jirga was held here?”
CM Murad directed Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) A D Khawaja to wholly investigate the matter and submit a detailed report in this connection at the earliest.
Furthermore, he directed the IGP to bring the participants of the jirga to justice and find out how a jirga was able to operate in the port city.
