LAHORE: Punjab Auditor General Karamat Hussain Bokhari on Wednesday uncovered eight cases of billions of rupees worth corruption in Punjab Police since 2000, which has revealed the extent of unprofessionalism within the provincial police department.
According to details, the Punjab Police is headed towards crisis as the higher-ups have turned a blind eye towards rampant corruption in the police department which is damaging the performance of the force. In order to rein in the police, Punjab Auditor General Karamat Hussain Bokhari had written a letter to the federal government to intervene in to the matter.
A few weeks ago, the Federal Interior Secretary Arshad Mirza and Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Arif Nawaz had received a letter from the auditor general which included documents that revealed that since 2000 the Punjab Police had been involved in rampant corruption, including forging documents, using department money for personal use and disappearance of police records after exchange of bribes.
So far, corruption worth Rs 2,020,000,000 had been unearthed in the provincial police department but no culprit had been arrested in any case. Bokhari, who recently got promoted to grade 22 as Additional Auditor General of Pakistan on October 11), stated in his letter to the federal secretary that he had intimated the IGP office about the irregularities in the police department on September 7, which fell on deaf ears.
He said that another letter was sent to the police office on September 21 but was ignored by high-ups in the police department. In addition, no inquiries have been initiated against any police official involved in corruption since 2000.
