QUETTA: Days after superintendent police (SP) Muhammad Ilyas and three members of his family were gunned down in Quetta’s Nawan Killi area, a joint task force of various security and intelligence officials has launched a “sanitisation” operation in the city.

In a media briefing, Frontier Corps (FC) Sector Commander Brigadier Tassawur and DIG Cheema apprised the reporters about the operation being conducted in the city to “sanitise” the area.

He said that personnel from various agencies, including the Intelligence Bureau and FC, were participating in the operation.

During the operations, special teams comprising of 120 personnel, including security personnel, locals and “women searchers” were formed to visit every house. The teams were divided into four sectors as part of “social manoeuvres” to conduct an effective operation, he explained.

Cheema further revealed that a search in 500 houses of the 3,000 houses in the area has already been completed. The operation had been initiated two days back and is expected to be completed by Sunday evening.

“Also part of the operation is four magistrates, medical professionals, while children and mosque imams were provided with gifts,” Brigadier Tassawur said.

Two similar low-level operations have been conducted in the past few weeks and a number of such operations are expected in the future, he stated.

Terrorist instances in Balochistan have seen a surge, with reports of 20 bullet-riddled bodies found in Turbat this week. All of the deceased belonged to Punjab.

Moreover, a DIG and an SP have been killed in targeted attacks in Quetta within the last couple of weeks.

Law enforcement agencies, including police officials and FC personnel, are often a target of terrorist activities in the area.
