Analytically examining ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s latest comments Wednesday, Pakistan Today Editor Arif Nizami on his talk show on Channel 92 said that it seemed as if the former premier is still firm on his tough stance against the judiciary and wanted to commit contempt of court for political grandstanding, as he had nothing to lose.
“Nawaz Sharif is both in the government as well as the opposition at the same time,” Nizami quipped.
Commenting on Sharif’s statement that “courts have double standards”, former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Barrister Ali Zafar said that this type of statement emanates only when someone is not confident about his legal defence.
“The court had to answer to Sharif’s questions, and it made it clear to the former PM that he wasn’t removed solely on the basis of holding an iqama,” he added. “Nawaz Sharif lied to the people.”
Ali Zafar further said that the former prime minister was making baseless allegations by comparing the cases registered against him with the ones brought against Imran Khan, arguing that every case (against Sharif) was based on facts while the one filed against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman was of a different nature.
He stated that the Supreme Court, in its judicial restraint, didn’t want to give Sharif family an opportunity to open yet another front against the judiciary by giving the former PM a contempt of court notice.
He said, “This would not only divert attention away from the ongoing cases,” but would also “provide a new narrative to the former PM to present in front of his electorate.”
Ali Zafar said if Nawaz Sharif had some solid evidence against the judiciary, where it can prove that the court was involved in a conspiracy against the former PM, then he should bring it forward.
Throughout the history the judiciary has never been this independent as it is right now, he said, adding that the courts have always given a verdict as per the constitution of the country.
Discussing the Hudaibiya Paper Mills case, he said a judicial bench is being formed to probe the case, and that it would take more than six months for a verdict, as all the members of Sharif family are named in the case.
