LARKANA: Dykes near world heritage site of Mohenjo Daro have become very weak and rapid erosion of Indus River at Hakra Loop Bund poses danger for this important historical site.

This was disclosed by Dr Kaleem Lashari, Consultative Technical Committee Chairman for saving ancient cultural monuments of Mohenjo Daro while talking to media after presiding over a meeting of the committee near here on Tuesday evening.

The meeting was attended by Manzoor Hussain Kanasro, Archaeology Director General (DG), Irrigation Department Chief Engineer Aijaz Shaikh, Executive Engineer Munir Morio, geological expert Dr Sarfraz Solangi, archaeology expert Syed Hakim Ali Shah Bukhari, Ghulam Mustafa Shar, Zaheeruddin Shar, architect Naveed Sangah and others.

It was decided in the meeting that a letter will be written in this connection to Sindh Government to inform it about the prevailing dangerous situation, so that foolproof arrangement could be made ahead of probable floods to save Sindh’s ancient world-famous ruins of Mohenjo Daro.

It was also decided to take immediate action to save the monuments from winter season for which conservation planning is being made to preserve the ruins from weather conditions.

A research cell would soon be established on the pattern of old conservation cell so that proper research work could be made throughout the year.

Dr Lashari said that PC-1 of 710 samples obtained from 55 bores of dry core drilling work are at the final stage of approval, adding, then research work will start on these samples.

He said that work of boundary wall around Mohenjo Daro land was left incomplete because a dyke will also be established around the ruins which will also save the monuments from water logging and salinity which surfaces during paddy crop-sowing season when irrigation water is released into the Dadu Canal.
