LAHORE: Muttahida Muslim League (MML) Convener Mir Zafarullah Jamali has cautioned that Pakistan’s sovereignty would be at stake if an attempt was made to impose another martial law in the country, adding that there would be a ‘black regime’ if all PML factions did not unite.
“I see a black regime if PML factions do not unite, and I really have no idea when the light will come,” he said. He was briefing reporters after the maiden meeting of the steering committee of the MML held under his chair.
Jamali said if leaguers like Nawaz Sharif and the Chaudhry brothers did not join the MML, then a “situation akin to post 1993 and 1997 elections will emerge and we will all have to pay for that”. The veteran leader said politicians would be responsible for the consequences if they did not unite at a single platform.
“I cannot guarantee whether anyone will support a military intervention in the future,” he said, adding that this was time to save Pakistan. To a question on the possibilities of the PML-N’s and the PML-Q’s inclusion in the newly formed MML, Jamali said he would do his best to convince both Nawaz and the Chaudhry brothers to join the alliance, but “I cannot impose his decision on others”.
However, he added that unification of all the Muslim leagues was in the larger interest of the nation as well as the parties. Asked whether he had a plan to motivate both PML factions to join the MML, he said that had no formal agenda to convince the leaders to join the new alliance.
