Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif said on Tuesday the anti-state elements were trying to destroy Pakistan while the government continued to sleep, a private TV channel reported. Expressing dismay over the terrorist attack in Karachi, Nawaz said that it was an attempt to destablise the country. “These were not common terrorists,” Nawaz told a public meeting in Mansehra.
He said the terrorists enjoyed the backing of well-trained and influential elements, but stopped short of naming names. Nawaz arrived in Mansehra at the end of a brief tour. Upon arrival in Mansehra, the city where his daughter and son-in-law reside, Nawaz was warmly received by a large number of party stalwarts. Interestingly though, he avoided addressing a public gathering in Abbottabad, which is considered his party’s stronghold in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Certain PML-N leaders have allied with Baba Haider Zaman in Abbottabad upon renaming of the former North West Frontier Province to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Zaman is leading the movement for a separate Hazara province, so the PML-N is in hot water in Abbottabad. In his address to party workers in Mansehra, Nawaz said he was disappointed with the performance of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)-led coalition government, saying it had failed in combating trends of terrorism and militancy.
“We had not yet recovered from the Abbottabad incident when the Karachi tragedy occurred,” he added.
