The US, Pakistan and Afghanistan will hold their trilateral meeting in Kabul today (Tuesday) to push forward the reconciliation process between the Hamid Karzai government and the Mullah Omar-led Taliban.
“On the invitation of Afghan Deputy Foreign Minister Javid Lodin, Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir is visiting Kabul for bilateral consultations and for the second meeting of the senior officials of the trilateral between Pakistan, Afghanistan and the US.
The meeting will be held on May 24, 2011,” a Foreign Office statement said. The foreign secretary met High Peace Council Chairman Professor Burhanuddin Rabbani in Kabul on Monday and conveyed President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s greetings. Bashir also conveyed Pakistan government’s commitment to facilitate the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation and peace process. “The foreign secretary also stressed that as agreed by Pakistan and Afghanistan, it is important to support the development track in Afghanistan.
Professor Rabbani praised the commitment by Pakistan and Pakistani leadership and requested Pakistan to continue its support to achieve the objectives of peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan,” the statement said. The foreign secretary addressed a group of Afghan editors and anchors in the Pakistani embassy in Kabul and briefed them on bilateral relations and on the objectives of trilateral dialogue.
