KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Tuesday denounced the rejection of the accountability bill that was being proposed to bring judges and generals to accountability.
“It’s unfortunate that parliament did not pass a more robust accountability bill. Without accountability for all and accountability across the board our current partial and political process shall remain controversial,” he tweeted.
Bilawal’s criticism is contrary to the party’s stance at the 16th meeting of the parliamentary committee on NAB laws last week. During the meeting, all the parties, including the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and PPP had reached a consensus to not bring judges and generals to accountability under the proposed National Accountability Commission (NAC).
The PML-N, which also had vowed to bring such a bill, backtracked from its stance in the meeting.
Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani on Thursday suggested said that a law is not needed if there is no provision to hold the judges and generals accountable. He further suggested that the existing National Accountability Ordinance could be appropriately amended if and when required.
Meanwhile, PPP Senator Farhatullah Babar stated that he was baffled when his party retreated from its earlier stance and decided against holding the military and judiciary accountable.
Babar lamented that enforcing accountability seemed a distant goal, and under such circumstances, there was only one option left: tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
Earlier in August, leaders of the two parties had drawn consensus on the proposal to formulate a new body to replace the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), proposing that the bureau would only probe cases pertaining to federal institutions.
No agreement, however, was reached on the matter.
This kid serves as our comedian in the West. Wish Pakistanis could choose some grown up normal guy to lead them.
