LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League leaders Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on Monday recorded their statements before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Lahore in connection with corruption references initiated in the early years of the Pervez Musharraf regime in 2000.

The two leaders had been summoned by NAB regarding the alleged misuse of authority and funds worth Rs2.43 billion after the references were approved by newly-appointed NAB Chairman Javed Iqbal. A team of four officials investigated the two politicians, a private TV channel reported.

The corruption case against the Chaudhrys of Gujrat is among the 179 mega corruption scandals, a list of which was compiled by NAB and submitted to the Supreme Court in July 2015. “We have no fear regarding an investigation or a case,” Elahi said while addressing a press conference following the appearance.

“We have always respected the courts and NAB is also an institution which we respect and will appear whenever they call us again,” he said and explained that this was not the only case he has had to face during his political career. Previously, he had been named and cleared in three murder cases.

“When you have not done anything wrong, you should go smiling and return smiling,” he said when asked whether he was smiling because he had satisfied the NAB investigators.
