The security of sensitive places, especially those belonging to the Pakistan Navy, has been tightened in the city amidst the threats of militant activities in the wake of PNS Mehran operation. Important government offices and establishments of security forces and intelligence agencies were cordoned off to avoid any mishap. Police, other forces and law enforcement agencies were put on high alert to keep the city safe from any unpleasant incident.
Entry to important offices, police stations and residential colonies, including Askari 10, where the body of Lieutenant Yasir Abbas was due to be brought from Karachi to his residence, has been conditioned with display of CNIC. Heavy deployment of Military Police, army and the police was observed in the cantonment area. Special security measures have been taken at Pakistan Navy recruitment and selection center Lahore and Pakistan Navy War College, which was the first to become militants’ target against Navy in 2008 when two motorcyclists blew themselves up claiming six lives.
Despite the fact that the navy is not directly involved in operations against militants in FATA, it has been targeted thrice. Recently last month, three Navy buses were attacked in Karachi. Analysts say that it may be a part of militants’ strategy to demoralize Navy for their role in facilitating supplies for NATO forces in Afghanistan through Karachi.
